A Dark Spy Story: Velvet Announced
I’m not a big fan of the spy genre. James Bond never interested me, but I enjoy an occasional Danger Girl. Velvet is Image Comics latest ongoing comic book series that is a spy comic with a “dark twist.” The series will be the first creator-owned project from Ed Brubaker (Fatale) and Steve Epting (The Avengers), who previously teamed-up to write the popular Captain America: Winter Soldier series.

The End is Nigh... The End Times of Bram and Ben, that is!
The Rapture has come and gone in my most anticipated mini-series of January 2013, The End Times of Bram and Ben. Now, Bram is back on earth and he is the only one who knows what heaven looks like. With some help from his morally conflicted roommate Ben, Bram will try to get some ambition in his life. Hopefully without their friendship – or the world – ending.

Fatale Becomes Ongoing Series
I am not a Fatale fan. I did give pretty high praise to Fatale #1 and #2, but by Fatale #3 I lost interest. I don’t really know why, but it wasn’t pulling me in. But for fans who were sucked in by Fatale’s femme fatale Josephine and the mysterious plotline, rejoice, for the curse of the femme fatale is now ongoing – and will be revealed in four standalone flashback issues by Brubaker and Phillips!

Hack/Slash Finale
It has been almost a decade since Tim Seeley (Witchblade writer) released his independent slasher comic Hack/Slash. Now, the series is unfortunately coming to a close. I have such fond memories of the series… killer animals that would make PETA mad… a guy with a Jack O’ Lantern head… and of course, the two entertaining protagonists and monster hunters Vlad and Cassie. I haven’t been reading the series in a while so the series feels even shorter for me than it actually is.

Image Comics Gets a Reality Check
The only reason this new comic book mini-series Reality Check isn’t the number one comic book I’m looking forward to this year is because I had a similar idea for a comic book myself… which was partly inspired by an episode of TMNT that was dedicated to and featured Jack Kirby. But while this comic book doesn’t have Jack Kirby, it does have Willard Penn, a comic book writer who has a surprise hit. Yes, the protagonist of this comic book is a guy who is a comic book writer… who comes face-to-face with his own creation, the superhero Dark Hour.

Image Comics' Snowfall Announced: It’s the year 2045 and there’s no more snow…
This seems like a very fitting new title considering how unseasonably warm it has been this year. In the world of Snowfall, it no longer snows. This upcoming science-fiction series takes place in the year 2045. According to writer Joe Harris (The X-Files), “With Snowfall, we’re presenting a 21st century America in which the climate has gone completely to shit and where fully recognized corporate personhood and control isn’t just accepted, but necessary. The time for industry forces lying about the effects of climate change have long passed.”
