Afar
Writer: Leila del Duca (Shutter)
Artist, Colorist & Letterer: Kit Seaton (The Black Bull of Norroway, Eve of All Saints) Release Date: Fall 2016 Boetema can use astral projection to explore other worlds, unintentionally possessing people to do it. She accidentally gets someone hurt when she's in another girl's body from another world. Her brother, Inotu, gets into trouble when he gets caught eavesdropping on an illegal business deal between small town business tycoons and their cyborg bodyguard. Together, these two must fix their problems as well as the problems people are facing both on their home planet and on others. This honestly sounds like the least interesting series image announced. If you are interested in the concept of astral projection, it could be intriguing. |

Black Cloud
Writers: Jason Latour (Southern Bastards, Spider-Gwen) & Ivan Brandon (Drifter, Viking)
Artist: Greg Hinkle (Airboy, The Rattler)
Colorist: Matt Wilson (The Wicked + The Divine)
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar (All Nighter, MacGyver)
Designer: Tom Muller (Drifter, Wolf)
Editor: Maria Ludwig
Release Date: Fall 2016
Zelda has been exiled to Earth for dreaming of revolution. And while those dreams are dashed, she is selling the key to the world she left behind.
This description is too vague for me to get too excited, but the creative team sounds interesting. Greg Hinkle's The Rattler was a great read, Jason Latour is responsible for Spider-Gwen and I smile a bit at anyone associated with The Wicked + The Divine.

The Black Monday Murders
Writer: Jonathan Hickman (East of West, Secret Wars, Avengers)
Artist: Tomm Coker (Undying Love)
Release Date: Fall 2016
The Black Monday Murders are a reinterpretation of... modern global economics? The series is about secret magical school that are really banking cartels that control all of society. And the people who run these cartels and keep us in line? Vampire Russian oligarchs, Black Popes, enchanted American aristocrats, and hitmen from the International Monetary Fund. Bonus content includes maps, corporate organization charts, decoded apocrypha, and stock tips.
This sounds like quite a bizarre concept... so we might be in for a wild ride. If Johnathan Hickman can make global economics interesting and not a snooze-fest. He has a pretty good pedigree though... plus, Tomm Coker's artwork in Undying Love did impress me. When is that series going to get finished, by the way...?

The Divided States of Hysteria

Writer & Artist: Howard Chaykin (Satellite Sam, Black Kiss, American Flagg)
Colorist: Jesus Aburto (Satellite Sam, Fantastic Four) Letterer: Ken Bruzenak (Silver Surfer, Azrael, American Flagg) Release Date: Winter 2016 After a dirty bomb wipes away New York City, the Second American Civil War begins. Five private contractors must stop the rage created from this incident by taking on the bombers and bringing them to justice. And the winner of best new series name goes to... this! We really do like our apocalyptic scenarios, and it sounds like this is another one of those. Except instead of World War III it's the Second American Civil War. |
Glitterbomb
Writer: Jim Zub (Skullkickers, Samuria Jack, Wayward)
Artist: Djibril Morissette-Phan (Archie)
Colorist: K. Michael Russell (Hack/Slash)
Letterer: Marshall Dillon (Vampirella, Skullkickers)
Release Date: Summer 2016
Definitely tempting my interest but still keeping it vague, Glitterbomb takes place in Hollywood. It's a horror story about fame and blood-soaked revenge. Sounds like it has the potential to be a fun whodunit... with some dark humor about our fame-obsessed world, I hope!

Horizon
Writer: Brandon Thomas (Spider-Man Unlimited, Voltron)
Artist: Juan Gedeon (Tomb Raider, Spread)
Colorist: Frank Martin Jr. (Thunderbolt, East of West, New Avengers)
Release Date: July 13, 2016
This is an Image Comics/Skybound title about survival. The story is about Zhia Malen, a warrior who thought the final war was over. Unfortunately, her planet has been targeted by Earth! When Malen goes to Earth, Earthlings will be told the lie that she is the beginning of an invasion of their world.
It's interesting to see Earth portrayed in such a way and not be the home planet of our protagonist. The concept kind of reminds me of Julian Darius's work on Martian Comics. Hopefully, the execution will be as unique.

The Hunt
Writer & Artist: Colin Lorimer (Burning Fields, Harvest)
Colorist: Joana Lafuente (Burning Fields, Transformers)
Letterer: Jim Campbell (Grimm Fairy Tales, Wonderland, Charmed)
An Image Comics/Shadowline Comics story, Orlaigh Roche confronts a group of soul-stealing spirits on her father's deathbed. She believes her father's soul is trapped in a netherworld and years later she journeys for answers to the ultimate question: what happens to us after we die?
That final question could have so many answers, and I'm really curious to see what Lorimer chooses. Hopefully, he won't end on Orlaigh finding the answer, but instead have issues with her exploring the afterlife.

Isola
Writer: Brenden Fletcher (Batgirl of Burnside, Gotham Academy)
Artist: Karl Kerschl (Gotham Academy, The Abominable Charles Christopher) Release Date: Spring 2017 This is an epic fantasy adventure series compared to Game of Thrones and Princess Mononoke. In a mythical land a queen's brother betrays her by turning her into a tiger. The powerful captain of the guard takes down the prince, without knowing he is the only one who can reverse the spell. Now, the two women must journey to the island of ISOLA, the gateway to the underworld, to find the queen's brother and return her to normal. You had me at the creative team. Gotham Academy is a great series and I chose Karl Kerschl as the best artist of 2015. This series sounds like it could be a lot of fun and I'm hoping there's a lot of comedy. I mean, it's a queen who has been turned into a tiger! So much fun could come from that. And when you have a creative team like this, I know they're capable of fun. |

Kill or be Killed
Writer: Ed Brubaker (Velvet, The Fade Out, Fatale)
Artist: Sean Phillips (The Fade Out, Fatale)
Colorist: Elizabeth Breitweiser (The Fade Out, Fatale, Outcast)
Release Date: Summer 2016
A pulp crime comic, Kill or be Killed is about a troubled young man who kills bad people. His secret, however, starts ruining his life and those of the people he cares about.
Another sterling creative team, who is capable of making compelling mysteries. I love the story of the vigilante, so I'm looking forward to this pulp crime approach to it.

Lake of Fire
Co-creators: Nathan Fairbairn (Scott Pilgrim, Batman Incorporated) & Matt Smith (Barbarian Lord)
Release Date: Summer 2016
It is 1220 AD, the Albigensian Crusade. An alien mining craft full of bloodthirsty predators crashes into the remote wilderness of the French Pyrenees. Now, a band of crusaders and a Cathar heretic is the last hope standing between God's Kingdom and Hell on Earth.
I was pretty sold on this thanks to Fairbairn's work on Scott Pilgrim, but this sounds like quite a departure from that title. I also wish they explained what a "Cathar heretic." Apparently, Catharism is a Christian dualist or Gnostic revival movement. Hopefully that makes more sense to you because it doesn't make much sense to me. I'm curious to see if this series will be greatly impacted by religion. I think the topic is rather intriguing and not talked about a lot.

Moonshine
Writer: Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, The New 52: Futures End, Wonder Woman)
Artist: Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets, Batman)
Editor: Will Dennis (100 Bullets, DMZ)
Release Date: Fall 2016
Moonshine is set during the Prohibition Era (when alcohol was made illegal) and taking place in the backwoods of Appalachia. It is the story of Lou Pirlo, a New Yorker sent to make a deal with the best moonshiner in West Virginia, Hiram Holt. Lou thinks it will be easy, but Holt proves to be as cunning as any crime boss in NYU. And not only does he not want his moonshine operations disturbed, he also has a dark family secret... a secret that is revealed by the full moon.
I enjoy how Image Comics mixes genres. I'm not usually a fan of gangster titles, but you mix in horror and I am! The backwoods moonshiner is already giving me fond memories of my uncle. Bottoms up!

Writer: Brenden Fletcher (Batgirl of Burnside, Gotham Academy)
Artists: Cameron Stewart (Batgirl, Catwoman) & Babs Tarr (Batgirl) Release Date: December 2016 A neon-styled sci-fi series from the creative team of Batgirl, Motor Crush features the competitive sport of motorcycle racing. At night, Domino Swift (the name of a badass... from the 90s) takes part in brutal, illegal bike wars to get an engine-boosting “machine narcotic” known as MOTOR CRUSH. But how was this machine created and for what ultimate purpose? Motorcycle racing could make for some really cool action scenes. Combined with a neon-style, I'm really looking forward to seeing the twists, turns and the finish line! |
Prima
Writer: Jen Van Meter (JSA All-Stars, Black Lightening: Year One)
Artist: Rick Burchett (The Batman Adventures, Superman Adventures) & Eric Newsom
Editor: Jeanine Schaefer (52, Wolverine)
Release Date: Fall 2016
A story about spies, thieves and ballerinas! An espionage romance set after WWII, Prima features a dance company of former spies right the wrongs of the Cold War. The soloist and Managing Director of a dance company, Sophia Forais and Pauline French, once served as a front for a French Resistance cell. Prince of Cats
Writer & Artist: Ron Wimberly (John Constantine - Hellblazer Special: Papa Midnite)
Letterer: Jarred Fisher
Designer: Jorden Haley
Release Date: Fall 2016
This series was originally released at Vertigo Comics (known for dark and gritty titles such as Hellblazer, Preacher and many others) to critical acclaim back in the summer of 2012. Prince of Cats puts Shakespeaere's Romeo and Juliet into an alternate universe-specifically, mid-80s New York. In this universe, dueling with live blades has become part of the culture in New York. But instead of focusing on Romeo and Juliet we focus on... Tybalt, the Prince of Cats?
If it didn't have the critical acclaim of Vertigo Comics, I might have much lower expectations. After all, why focus on a cat rather than the main characters. But I enjoy adaptations of classic works with a lot of twists in them. And this one sounds like quite a big knot has been created. Let's just hope us readers will enjoy untangling it...

Rockstars
Writer: Joe Harris (The X-Files, Snowfall)
Artist: Megan Hutchison (Critical Hit, An Aurora Grimeon Story: Will O' the Wisp)
Release Date: Fall 2016
Follow two young rock 'n roll detectives uncovering a mystery about a legendary band, dead groupies, human sacrifice and a supernatural undercurrent connecting so many famous secrets about rock music throughout the ages. The story focuses on Jackie Mayer, a young rock nerd who knows every secret in the industry and has the power to 'see' what most people miss; music writer and aspiring investigative reporter Dorothy Buell; and Jackie's loyal cat Skydog. The group investigates the unsolved ‘groupie’ murders, which date from the 1970s to present-day Los Angeles
I really like how this title could serve as a long love letter to rock music with some supernatural elements thrown in. One of the many intriguing parts of this series is how each story arc will feature a different rock n' roll era, such as British Invasion, Punk, and 80s Heavy Metal (please please PLEASE include K-pop).

Romulus
Writer: Bryan Hill (Postal)
Artist: Nelson Blake II (The Magdalena, The Witchblade)
A Top Cow Productions/Image Comics title, Romulus is set in the near future and is about the last in a line of near-mystical martial artists. This martial artist is fighting a war against The Order of Romulus, the ancient secret society that trained her and that has controlled the world since Ancient Roman times. She plans on killing them all before they can cull the population with genocide and rule a New World Order.
Another interesting concept, I like the idea of one woman against the world. There could be a lot of good action. The writer, Hill, is also responsible for Postal, a pretty memorable Image Comics series that I keep coming back to.

Seven to Eternity
Writer: Rick Remender (Black Science)
Artist: Jerome Opeña (Uncanny X-Force, Fear Agent) Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth (Tokyo Ghoul, Wytches) Release Date: Fall 2016 Seven to Eternity is a modern fantasy series following the dying knight Adam Osidis. He comes from a disgraced house and is planning on ridding the world of an insidious God that made him part of a Faustian deal. Then there is the Machiavellian warlord Gharils Sulm, The God of Whispers, who has a spy in every household, spreading paranoia across the kingdoms. Adam must decide whether he wants to free their world of the evil God’s burden or give in to the The God of Whispers’ promises of salvation and safety. This sounds like it could make for a very compelling fantasy story, filled with some pretty difficult decisions for Adam. I'm curious to see if Remender will make Adam a hero or a villain... or maybe something in-between? This story could go in so many different directions, which is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to reading it. |

Surgeon X
Writer: Sara Kenney
Artists: John Watkiss (Deadman, Human Target) & James Devlin (Vietnam Zombie Holocaust)
Letter: Jared K. Fletcher (DMZ, Hellblazer)
Editor: Karen Berger (founder of Vertigo, The Sandman)
Release Date: Fall 2016
In an antibiotic apocalypse in the near future of London, Rosa Scott becomes Surgeon X, a vigilante doctor using experimental surgery and black market drugs to treat patients. Unfortunately, Rosa's work makes her develop a god complex. She decides who will live and who will die.
I remember talking about the "antibiotic apocalypse" in an Apocalyptic Visions class I had (yes, such a class exists-goes to show just how obsessed we are with the apocalypse nowadays). This seems like a really scary and realistic apocalypse... moreso than zombies, at least. I love the concept of this series. Adding to the realism, the creators did a lot of research on their material, speaking with hundreds of scientists, physicians, historians, economists, ethicists & philosophers. It was funded by a Society Award from Wellcome Trust, an independent global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health. Of all the upcoming Image Comics series, this is the one I am looking forward to the most!

Writer: Ivan Brandon (Drifter)
Artist: Esad Ribić (Secret Wars)
Colorist: Ive Svorcina (Thor: God of Thunder, Secret Wars)
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar (All Nighter, MacGyver)
Designer: Tom Muller (Drifter, Wolf)
Editor: Sebastian Girner (PunisherMAX, New Mutants, Cable)
Release Date: Fall 2016
This futurist drama is about the rise and fall of Satta Flynn, a popular in a time when War has been privatized and is a form of entertainment. Satta is LIVE on TV. There are war medics that are also pit mechanics and armies financed and equipped by super-corporations.
This concept reminds me of the movie Gamer. The movie had some failings and I'd really like to see this comic book capitalize where Gamer failed. Definitely one of the series I'm looking forward to the most-probably only second to Surgeon X.

Winnebago Graveyard
Writer: Steve Niles (Simon Dark, The October Faction, Pieces for Mom, The October Faction)
Artist: Alison Sampson (Broken Frontier: Anthology)
Colorist: Stéphane Paitreau (Tales of the Dragon Guard)
Letterer: Clem Robins (100 Bullets, Hellblazer)
Release Date: Fall 2017
A horror-adventure story about a family with a teenage son. On vacation, the family runs into some trouble when they get stuck in a town of satanist.
Steve Niles? Sign me up! He has written so many horror stories, the man is like the Stephen King of comics! It was also mentioned that the art style of the book was inspired by 1970s horror films. Or, as Sampson colorfully puts it, “about 70% Americana, slightly heightened, like True Blood, and about 30% ripping off of heads.”
