Steve Niles to Write Ash and the Army of Darkness Series

Ashley J. Williams survived two Evil Dead movies and Army of Darkness, plus dozen of comic book series and crossovers with the greats of horror, including the likes of Freddy Krueger, Jason and most recently Hack/Slash. Ash is revving up his chainsaw for a new ongoing series: Ash and the Army of Darkness.
The new series will have the same tone as all Army of Darkness related material: a splatter of action here, a slash of horror their, all topped off with a sprinkle of dark humor. The protagonist, Ashley Williams (also known as Ash) goes traveling through time to fight off demons.
At the helm of the series is the horrifyingly brilliant Steve Niles, creator of the popular 30 Days of Night, Transfusion, Frankenstein Alive, Alive, Pieces for Mom: A Tale of the Undead and numerous other horror titles, as well as Batman: Gotham County Line. According to Niles, the ongoing series Army of Darkness will receive an overhaul within this new ongoing series.

“What I’m doing with Ash and the Army of Darkness is a complete reboot… We start and the last frame of the film and then go right to the next. It’s a wild ride and I think fans of the film will be very happy because I am bringing back a lot of what made the movie so fun. My run of Ash and the Army of Darkness takes place almost entirely in the 1300′s setting. That was what made Army of Darkness stand apart. I’m hoping readers agree.” This move isn’t surprising considering the many series Dynamite Comics has been rebooting with the help of well-known writers, like the recent Red Sonja series rebooted by Gail Simone.
Personally I couldn’t be happier that Steve Niles is writing Ash and the Army of Darkness. I’ve yet to read anything bad by him. A lot of people credit him with bringing back the horror genre of comics (my favorite genre if my frequent reviews of gory comic books were any indication) into popularity alongside several other horror writers. I expect his take on Ash and the Army of Darkness will breath new life into the franchise. Hail to the king baby!
