Damian’s Back? Damian: Son of Batman Announced

Grant Morrison made waves when in Batman Incorporated #8 (spoilers for those two people out there who don't know) when he killed off Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's son and Robin. As soon as it happened not only was I speculating who would be the next Robin but when Damian Wayne was going to return. After all, comic book characters seem to walk through a revolving door when it comes to death. If Jason Todd can come back, surely Damian Wayne can too.
Unfortunately, the announcement that in October a four issue mini-series known as Damian: Son of Batman does not mean that Damian Wayne is really back but it's a start. This story could turn out to be a "what if" kind of thing. According to DC Comics, this mini-series is about "a possible future that may never be" as it chronicles what it would be like in the future if Damian Wayne became Batman (didn't we already do this in Batman #666? With that numbering I'm sure you can guess how that turned out). Andy Kubert has been given the daunting task of drawing and writing the mini-series. But considering he made possibly one of my favorite issues of the year, Batman #18, which featured Harper Row consoling Batman about Damian Wayne's demise. Kubert, alongside Grant Morrison, created Damian Wayne back in 2006 with Batman & Son. |

My crack about Batman #666 doesn't go unaddressed by Kubert, who actually wrote that issue of Batman and plans on having that issue play off the new mini-series. According to Kubert in an interview with Parallel Worlds:
"I had a big affinity for Damian when I drew Batman issue #666 (in 2007)... I really liked that Batman and always wanted to revisit him. Damian is a bit different than the 'Bruce Wayne' Batman. Grant Morrison tweaked his character in a way that made it very endearing for me to draw. And to write. Basically, what I'm doing is exploring the path that Damian has taken to become Batman. I think readers will see him in a different light than before." As for the artwork, Kubert claims he's going to use a number of mediums to work with the color artist to strengthen the story. What does that mean? No idea, I guess we're just going to have to wait for the preview pages to find out more. Damian: Son of Batman #1 will go on sale October 30th. |
